A Summer's Reading

George is a 20 year old young man,who dropped out of school at the age of sixteen. Since then, he has done nothing all day long, he doesn't study anything, only reads some magazines that his sister Sophie brings him. George, as the main character, develops along the story. He makes his own journey towards improving himself and his life.
-
George is described as a tall bony boy. George grows up in the Bronx, in average conditions. It seems like he does nothing ,he only reads somtimes some magazines. He likes to go to the park in the evenings to think and dream a little bit. George does not work in any job, so he does not earn money at all. He gets some money from his sister.George's mother died, his father is barely at home, he works all day long, ,and so does his sister,Sophie. It seems that Sophie cares more about George, while his father is never there.
-
George has a difficult nature. He is very lazy, he gets tired with everything he starts. He seems to be immature and he does not take his life seriously. George changes thanks to his neighbor Mr. Cattanzara. First, George does not do anything, and he does not read, but while the good rumors about his reading are spread(gr.) in the neighberhood, its(gr.) makes George feel confidant again. In the end of the story he start(gr.) to read.

In the beginning of the story, I did not like George so much, although I could identify with him. George, along the story, did a lot of mistakes when he lied many times and hurt even himself. Instead of doing nothing and telling everybody he is reading one hundreds books, he could just do this without expecting appreciation. I liked him much more when he changed in the end, and I started to appreciate him as a character.
In my eyes, this story, like all others stories, has a message, that the author wants to pass us(phr.). The message is- work hard, make an effort, and in this way you will succed- it is worth it.
